قساوسة أميركيون قلقون على مستقبلهم الكهني
أعرب عدد كبير من قساوسة الكنيسة الكاثوليكية في الولايات المتحدة عن قلقهم على مستقبلهم الوعظي في ضوء القواعد الجديدة التي وضعتها الأبرشية في مسعى منها لإعادة الثقة في الكنيسة بعد فضائح الاعتداءات الجنسية على الأطفال.
وقال رئيس مجلس أساقفة الاتحاد الوطني الأسقف روبرت سيلفا إن القواعد الجديدة تعاملت بعاطفة الجمهور أكثر من اعتبار قواعد الشفقة. ويضم المجلس في عضويته نصف عدد القساوسة البالغ عددهم 46 ألفا في الولايات المتحدة.
وأضاف أن القواعد الجديدة تحد من تعامل الأسقف أو القس مع أي طفل وتتأثر بالنظرة للفضائح السابقة. وتعتبر القواعد أن أي اتصال غير لائق مع الطفل بأي شكل سيكون عرضة للعقاب.
وقال كاردينال فيلادلفيا أنتوني بيفلاكوا إنه قلق جدا من اللغة التي استخدمت في "ميثاق حماية الأطفال واليافعين" وأعرب عن أمله بأن تتعرض للمراجعة بعد عامين.
وتنص القواعد الجديدة على أن الكاهن الذي يعتدي جنسيا على طفل يمنع من الالتقاء بالناس ولكن يبقى في الخدمة الكنسية، وهو ما اعتبره كثيرون سياسة تساهل مع القساوسة الذين يرتكبون انتهاكات جنسية مع الأطفال.
وقد هزت الأزمة الكنيسة الكاثوليكية الأميركية من أساسها وأثرت في مصداقيتها منذ الكشف عن الفضيحة في يناير/ كانون الثاني الماضي، ويواجه نحو ثلاثة آلاف من القساوسة اتهامات التحرش الجنسي بالأطفال، ومنذ ذلك الحين استقال أو فصل 250 قسا على الأقل.

الكنائس الغربية غاضبة من نشر فضائح المطارنة

تحوّل مؤتمر أقيم في العاصمة النمساوية خلال الأيام الماضية لبحث دور وسائل الإعلام في الحوار بين الأديان، إلى مناسبة للتراشق بالاتهامات بين الإعلاميين ورجال الكنيسة؛ إذ طغى التذمر الكنسي من الطريقة "الفضائحية" التي تعالج بها وسائل الإعلام الشؤون الخاصة برجال الكنيسة البارزين، فيما توارى الحديث عن الحوار جانباً.
وعقد المؤتمر الإعلامي السنوي "فينالي 2000"، الذي حضرته "قدس برس" في دار بلدية فيينا بمشاركة نخبة من ممثلي الطوائف الدينية والإعلاميين وعلماء الاتصال، وبتنظيم من معهد الصحافة الدولي، بالتعاون مع معهد الإعلام وعلم الاتصال في جامعة فيينا.
فخلال المؤتمر وجه الدكتور ميخائيل ستايكوس -كبير رجالات الكنيسة اليونانية الشرقية في النمسا- انتقادات للأداء الصحافي والتغطية الإعلامية في النمسا، فلا أحد من الإعلاميين اكترث لحرمان ممثلي ربع المليون أرثوذكسي في النمسا من الالتقاء بوفد الحكماء الثلاثة الأوروبي، الذي زار النمسا الصيف الماضي لتقصي الحقائق تمهيداً للبت في شأن مستقبل العقوبات الأوروبية ضد فيينا. وأضاف يقول: "لم يتفوه أحد بكلمة واحدة رداً على ذلك، حتى من جانب الحكومة، ولو حدث ذلك لليهود لأثار الأمر ثورة عارمة"، على حد وصفه.
وأوضح أنّ الصحافة لم تعد مهنة، وإنما سلطة مسؤولة، واتهمها بأنها "تركض وراء الأخبار، دون أن تقوم بتغطية شاملة وموضوعية لما تقوم به المؤسسات الدينية أو لمواقفها وآرائها، إذ يتصل الصحافيون بالمؤسسات الدينية بحثاً عن البيانات الصحافية فقط، ولا يعتنون بالقيام بتغطية واسعة ومعمقة للحقائق ومجريات الأمور في الأوساط الدينية"، كما جاء في مداخلته.
الكنيسة طوّرت أداءها الإعلامي بسبب الفضائح
ومن جانبها لاحظت إليزابيث أونيموس -رئيسة تحرير مجلة "ملتي ميديا" النمساوية- أنّ فضيحة اعتداء المطران الأكبر لفيينا هيرمان غرور جنسياً على أطفال في أحد الأديرة، والتي اندلعت عام 1995، أدت إلى دفع الكنيسة الكاثوليكية ومؤسساتها لمراجعة خطابها الإعلامي ووسائله، وأثار اهتمامها بشكل جدي بميدان العلاقات العامة.
ولاحظت أونيموس أنه كان من نتيجة ذلك صدور مجلة "ديالوج" التي توزعها الكنيسة على نطاق واسع بالمجان في عموم النمسا، كما جرت محاولات للتخلي عن الخطاب التقليدي، والانطلاق مباشرة صوب الرأي العام بعد أن تبين بوضوح تام أنّ وسائل الإعلام السائدة تتولى معالجة صورة الكنيسة بطريقة فضائحية. وأكدت أنّ "الكنيسة تعاني من الصحافة الصفراء لأنها تهاجمها" وتستهدفها بالانتقاد والتهكم، كما قالت.
المطارنة لا يعرفون التعامل مع الإعلام
وبدوره تحدث محرر الشؤون السياسية الداخلية في مجلة "بروفيل" النمساوية "توماس هوفر" عن المطارنة بالانتقاد "لأنهم لا يعرفون كيف يتعاملون مع الإعلام، وهذا ما تبين بشكل واضح في أسلوب تعاملهم مع قضية (المطران الأكبر السابق لفيينا) غرور".
وكانت مجلة "بروفيل" هي التي فجرت فضيحة غرور قبل خمس سنوات؛ مما تسبب في تردي صورة الكنيسة وعاد عليها بالمتاعب.
ورفض هوفر وصف الصحافة النمساوية التي روّجت للفضيحة، وعلى رأسها مجلة "بروفيل"، بأنها "صحافة صفراء"، كما نفى وجه الصواب في الاتهام الموجه لمحرري الشؤون الكنسية الناقدين في الصحافة النمساوية بأنهم "لا يفقهون شيئاً عن الأمور التي يتطرقون إليها"، وحمّل رجال الكنيسة المسؤولية عن "العناوين الفضائحية العريضة التي ارتبطت بهم في السنوات الأخيرة".
تراجع الاكتراث بالفضائح الكنسية
وأما الصحافية النمساوية المعروفة باربرا كودينهوف كاليرغي، المعروفة بتعاطفها مع الكنيسة، فأكدت في مداخلتها أنّ اهتمام الرأي العام النمساوي بالشؤون الدينية يتقدم بصورة ملحوظة، لكنه يتراجع فيما يتعلق بالكنيسة وبفضائحها.
فخلال خمس سنوات عجاف من الفضائح التي عصفت بالكنيسة الكاثوليكية في النمسا تبيّن أنّ اهتمام الجمهور الواسع بالتطورات المقلقة داخل الكنيسة قد كان تعبيراً عن مطلب شعبي بتعديل بعض الأوضاع الداخلية في المؤسسات الكاثوليكية. أما الآن فقد مرّت تلك "الموجة"، وهو ما يفسر تخلي الصحف والمجلات عن محرري الشؤون الكنسية فيها، مع تراجع هذا الاهتمام.
وأشارت كودينهوف كاليرغي إلى أنّ الشأن الديني في النمسا ليس شأناً كاثوليكياً كما يسود الاعتقاد، وكما تروج وسائل الإعلام، وإنما هناك كنائس بروتستانتية وأرثوذكسية، فضلاً عن العدد الكبير من الذين يعتنقون الدين الإسلامي، بالإضافة إلى اليهود.
ورأت أنّ من واجب وسائل الإعلام أن تركز تغطيتها على معالجة الحياة الدينية للجمهور، وأن تتناول المسائل العقدية والإيمانية التي تمس المواطنين. وخلصت إلى أنّ تراجع الاهتمام بالكنيسة هو ظاهرة يتميز بها الجيل الصاعد، الذي لم ينشأ في المساكن الداخلية التابعة للكنيسة، أو في أكناف مدارس فاعلة تابعة للكنائس.
وأعربت في المقابل عن استغرابها من عدم إفصاح الرموز الكاثوليكية عن مواقفها إزاء الظواهر الاجتماعية والإنسانية التي تحرك الشارع النمساوي، مثل قضية اختناق شاب نيجيري في النمسا قبل عامين خلال ترحيله عن البلاد، رغم الاهتمام الإعلامي والشعبي الواسع الذي أحدثته القضية.
الفضائح صرفت الجيل الجديد عن الكنيسة
وفي مداخلته تحدث فولفغانغ كلاين -المدير الجديد لقسم البرامج الدينية في مؤسسة الإذاعة والتلفزة النمساوية- فأكّد إمكانية إثارة اهتمام الجمهور على نطاق واسع بالموضوعات الدينية، دون اللجوء إلى "العرض الفضائحي السائد"، وهو ما برهن عليه برنامج "كرويتس أوند كفير" الذي يبثه التلفاز النمساوي كل أسبوعين ويحظى بأكثر من مليون مشاهد.
وشدّد كلاين على أنّ كل من قام بتغطية الشؤون الكنسية في وسائل الإعلام هو مدموغ بطابع "الصحافة الصفراء الهابطة" التي تركز على إثارة الفضائح، وأيد الملاحظة القائلة بأنّ "الفضائح الكنسية لم تعد مثيرة تماماً للرأي العام، كما أنّ الكنيسة تبدو اليوم أقدر على التعامل مع الفضائح".
لكنه كشف عن قلقه من عدم معرفة الناشئة في النمسا بالكنيسة أو تمييزهم لرموزها على الإطلاق، كما أنّ الكنيسة الإنجيلية (البروتستانتية) تعاني هي الأخرى من فقدان أعداد كبيرة من أتباعها محلياً، على خلفية فضائح الكنيسة الكاثوليكية. وأعرب عن اعتقاده بأنّ هناك من قفز لمواقع التغطية الإخبارية ونسج التحقيقات الإعلامية عن الكنيسة دون أن يكون مؤهلاً لذلك بالدراسة اللاهوتية مثلاً.

Judge: 26 Men Can Sue Over Alleged Priest Sex Abuse
Advocate Says Bishop Fighting Victims

NEWARK, N.J. -- A judge allowed lawsuits on behalf of 26 men, most of whom claim they were abused by a former Catholic priest in northern New Jersey, to proceed.
The Diocese of Paterson had sought to dismiss the two suits on the grounds that too much time had passed since the acts in question had occurred. But Superior Court Judge Deanne Wilson, sitting in Morristown, rejected the request Wednesday afternoon.
In the lawsuits, 21 of the plaintiffs claim they were abused by the Rev. James Hanley, a former priest who served in Mendham, among other places. Four other priests accused of abusing the remaining plaintiffs are named as defendants, as is the diocese.
The lawsuits include a transcript of an interview the plaintiffs' lawyer, Greg Gianforcaro, conducted with Hanley last fall in which he admits having molested at least one young man.
"I didn't want to learn sex the way I learned sex," said Kevin Kingree, one of the plaintiffs. He claims Hanley molested him from 1975 to 1978, starting when he was a sixth-grader at St. Joseph's parish in Mendham.
Another plaintiff, Paul Steidler, said the victims are determined to have their day in court.
"Father Hanley ripped through my home town of Mendham like a tornado," he said. "His manipulative, premeditated, sadistic and evil acts have ruined lives and caused intense pain to others, especially the spouses and parents of his victims. We look forward to proving in court that the Paterson Diocese knew, or reasonably should have known, about Father Hanley's (actions) and did nothing to stop it."
Hanley refused to discuss the matter when visited by an Associated Press reporter in 2002. Hanley has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment on Wednesday. He was not criminally charged, and was not named as a defendant because he is cooperating with plaintiffs, Gianforcaro said.
A diocesan spokeswoman said the judge left open the possibility that the diocese could seek to have the cases dismissed in the future, and declined further comment.
The legal maneuvering drew angry reactions from a Catholic clergy abuse survivors group.
"This motion should never have been filed," said Mark Serrano, a member of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. He was one of the first abuse victims to break a confidentiality agreement and speak out publicly about abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy in the United States.
Serrano faulted former Paterson Bishop Frank Rodimer, as well as his successor, Arthur Serratelli, who took over in July, for failing to help victims.
"Many people might want to give the new bishop a pass since he is still relatively new to his job after four months," Serrano said. "How long does the new bishop need to do the right and Christian thing? Six months? Nine months? One year?
"Fighting victims in court is a choice that Bishop Serratelli has made just like his predecessor, and yet this approach goes against church policy, it goes against principles of common decency, and it goes against the very precepts of Christianity that Bishop Serratelli purportedly espouses."

Ex-priest waives right to hearing

CAMBRIDGE - A former priest with the Catholic Diocese of Peoria will face Wisconsin charges of second-degree sexual assault of a child after waiving his right to an extradition hearing Monday in Henry County Circuit Court.
Francis Engels, 68, of 702 N. Fremont in Kewanee, spoke briefly with a public defender about leaving some credit cards and other information behind before signing the waiver in a very brief appearance before Judge Ted Hamer.
Engels, dressed in orange county jail garb and flip-flops, signed the waiver without even reading it. Hamer handed it back, telling Engels to make sure he read and understood the document.
"You've agreed to waive extradition and go back to the state of Wisconsin?" Hamer questioned. "Yes, sir," Engels replied.
Milwaukee County, Wis., authorities said Monday that Engels faces a maximum of 10 years in prison on each of the two sexual assault charges alleging he abused a Cambridge altar boy during trips to the state 25 years ago.
Engels served as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Annawan before stepping down in 1993 amid allegations of sexual molestation from several former parishioners. He also had responsibility for St. Mary's Mission in Hooppole.
Police arrested Engels at his Kewanee residence Dec. 1 after Milwaukee County issued a warrant Nov. 30, according to the circuit clerk's office.
Wisconsin authorities have 10 days to retrieve Engels from the Henry County Jail. Milwaukee County police Capt. Paul Tiffan said once in Wisconsin, Engels will have an initial appearance in court where he will receive a copy of the criminal complaint against him, and a judge will set bail.
Assistant District Attorney Jane Carroll will handle the prosecution, she was unavailable for comment Monday.
The charges relate to trips Engels allegedly took in the 1980s to Wisconsin with Dan Koenigs, who was an altar boy. Earlier this year, Koenigs, now 37 and living in Chicago, sued the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in Peoria County Circuit Court alleging he was the victim of sexual abuse.

Ex-priest guilty of child abuse

A FORMER policeman and Mormon priest was sentenced to jail today for sexually abusing his 10-year-old step-granddaughter.
The 47-year-old Victorian, whose identity was suppressed to protect his young victim, was sentenced in the Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court to 18 months jail with a non-parole period of 12 months.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Val Ciacia said the man had abused the girl, who was his second wife's granddaughter, on four separate occasions, rubbing her genitals and once masturbating in front of her.
The court was told that on one occasion when the girl was staying at the man's house and her mother was away the man had climbed into the girl's bed with no pants on and rubbed her genitals.
Mr Ciacia said the girl's mother had come home and caught the man in the girl's room.
"She screamed when she found the accused hiding behind the door of the bedroom," he told the court.
The court was told the man had been on bail for similar offences at the time.
He pleaded guilty to four counts of committing an indecent act with a child under 16, a charge which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
In sentencing the man Magistrate Anne Collins said he had breached the trust of the girl, who now felt she had lost her innocence and lived with fear.
But she recognised that he had pleaded guilty, sparing his victim from the ordeal of testifying, and that he was remorseful and had strong support from his family.
The man's mother, sisters and a group of friends were in court today but the court was told his children were no longer speaking to him.
His lawyer John Desmond said he was undergoing rehabilitation and his acts represented, "a period of aberrant behaviour by a mature man in a life otherwise crime free".
The court heard the man had been a police officer for five years and had been a priest with the Mormon church, but had suffered burnout in his 30s when his marriage ended and he was excommunicated from the church.
He remarried in 1996 but had been caught cheating on his wife and, after a life of abstinence from alcohol, had begun drinking heavily.
Judge Collins ordered the man to give police a DNA sample and told him he would have to enter a program for sex offenders to be eligible for parole.
The man was handcuffed in the court after the sentence was handed down but his lawyer lodged an appeal and he was later released on bail.
The appeal will be heard in the County Court on December 9.

AN ANGLICAN priest investigated in Australia's biggest child porn sting is still on the church payroll despite senior figures saying he has confessed to police.
Parishioners at a Mount Waverley service were told yesterday that the Rev Father John Crump had admitted possessing child pornography.
But he is still entitled to live rent-free and will continue to be paid until his term expires at the end of the month.
It also emerged yesterday that:
FATHER Crump ran a photographic studio at Sovereign Hill tourist park for several years before joining the clergy.
HE SERVED in several parishes across the state.
A PRISON officer who suicided after being questioned on child porn allegations had worked with jailed pedophiles.
THE body of a second Victorian caught in the child porn crackdown was found near Heyfield, in Gippsland.
Father Crump was one of 68 Victorians and more than 200 Australians questioned in the huge swoop that stunned the nation last week.
He was in hiding yesterday as his congregation gathered at St Philip's Anglican church yesterday.
They were read a letter sent to Father Crump, 58, by church registrar John McKenzie, explaining why he had been stood down.
"I have been advised . . . that a computer and other material have been seized by police, and that you have made a full admission on tape in relation to certain matters of which you are likely to be charged," the letter said.
It said the priest was suspended immediately, pending the outcome of police investigations, but he would still receive normal pay and entitlements.
Father Crump once worked as a professional photographer in Ballarat, the Herald Sun can reveal.
Former employee Ian Wilson said Fr Crump owned a photographic business called The Happy Medium in the late 1970s.
He also ran a photography studio at Sovereign Hill for several years.
Mr Wilson said he was surprised when Fr Crump decided to study theology.
"It was just such a total change of direction."
Sovereign Hill chief executive Jeremy Johnson said Fr Crump leased the studio in 1975-76.
The Mt Waverley vicarage where Fr Crump lives with his wife and two children was deserted yesterday as parishioners struggled to deal with allegations against him.
"We're absolutely devastated," one said.
Fellow worshipper Rohan Abeysinghe said: "It was quite a surprise to us. None of us are without sin, but the important thing is to recognise it and seek help."
Senior church figures said they were horrified by allegations against the priest, who had been at the parish for about three years. They said he would be offered counselling and other assistance, but would not be helped with his legal costs.
Fr Crump worked across Victoria after graduating from Melbourne University's Ridley College in 1985. He then served at Ararat, Casterton and Wangaratta West before being appointed a rector in Albury in 1995-2001.
It also emerged that the prison officer who killed himself had worked extensively with pedophile prisoners.
A former colleague said the man was a senior warder at Fulham Correctional Centre, near Sale.
A source said the guard spent most of his shifts in the jail's protection unit, which houses sex offenders, including pedophiles.
"It makes you wonder, if you work in protection for so long, what happens? It makes you feel sick inside," the source said.

Northern Cape police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Catholic priest based in Colesberg. The priest was found with his throat slit inside his house yesterday, after he failed to arrive to conduct a mass. Police caught a 34-year old man in Hopetown driving the pirest's missing car.
The suspect was arrested in the early hours of this morning.
Tony Modise, a police spokesperson, says the vehicle was being driven recklessly at a very high speed in the streets of Hopetown. Police gave chase and ordered the driver to stop. The suspect ignored them, but police managed to stop and arrest him.
Wally Mackaiser, a police commissioner, applauded the Hopetown police for the arrest. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
Dipuo Peters, the Northern Cape premier, has meanwhile condemned the murder of the 60-year-old priest, who was originally from England.

Calif. Jury Acquits Priest of Sex Abuse

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - A Roman Catholic priest was found not guilty Friday of three charges that he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl, and the jury deadlocked on 18 similar charges.
The judge declared a mistrial on those counts and it was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would seek a new trial for Jose Superiaso.
Telephone messages left for prosecutors and Superiaso's attorney were not immediately returned Friday.
One of the counts against Superiaso included a special allegation that he engaged in oral copulation with the minor. The jury, which had been deliberating since Tuesday, found that to be untrue.
Superiaso was accused of molesting the girl between July 1994 and November 1995, when he served at St. Andrew Church in Daly City. He had pleaded innocent to all counts.
The accuser, who was 12 when the abuse allegedly began, testified against him. Earlier in the trial, Superiaso's lawyer attempted to cast doubt on her testimony.
The priest was arrested in June 2003 after he was lured back to California from Santa Fe, N.M., where he had moved in 1998 and was serving as a priest. After his accuser reported the alleged abuse, police arranged for her to contact Superiaso by telephone in New Mexico.
Police taped the phone conversations, which were replayed in court during his trial. On the tapes, Superiaso is heard acknowledging having a sexual relationship with the accuser.
The accuser asked the priest to return to California so they could meet at a cafe. Instead, police were waiting there to arrest him.
Superiaso remained in custody after Friday's verdict, but the judge reduced his bail from $7.5 million to $2.5 million. An Oct. 7 court date was set for any future hearings.

Lawyers argue constitutional freedom of religion protect church in some abuse cases

OAKLAND, Calif. - Lawyers for the Roman Catholic Church of Northern California argued Friday against a tentative order that would allow abuse victims the right to sue over negligent hiring, firing and supervision of troublesome priests.
In an Alameda County courtroom, church lawyers argued that the damages sought by the victims of decades-old child molestation cases must be limited by the constitutional guarantee of the free exercise of religion.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Ronald Sabraw issued a temporary ruling Thursday stating a 2002 state law temporarily lifting the statute of limitation on damage suits against institutions that protected known child molesters gave abuse victims the right to sue.
Arguing for the church, lawyer Paul Gaspari said the Constitution forbade punishing the church for the standards it sets for the ordination of priests.
"If a religious institution chooses to ordain a known child molester that it felt had truly repented, it has that constitutional right," Gaspari said. "The government may not second-guess that choice."
Marci Hamilton, a lawyer assisting the abuse victims' legal team, argued that repentance was not relevant to the issue of culpability.
"If the church harms people, it can be held accountable," Hamilton said.
Gaspari said the church can be found negligent for its supervision of priests - but not for its hiring or firing.
Sabraw is expected to issue a final written order sometime this month.

Shootout in Colombian church leaves at least 3 dead, 14 injured

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A shootout erupted in a church in a cocaine-producing region of southern Colombia, leaving at least three people dead and 14 wounded, authorities said Sunday.
While police put the death toll at three, a local doctor said four had been killed.
The bloodshed began when assailants entered the church Saturday night and shot dead a man in the pews, said Maj. Eduardo Beltran, police commander in Puerto Asis, where the attack occurred. But the apparent target of the gunmen was in another row with his family. When the shooting began he took out a gun and starting returning fire, Beltran said.
"It turned into a firefight," Beltran said.
Police earlier said the assailants were suspected members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or the FARC, as Colombia's main rebel group is known. But Beltran said further investigations indicate right-wing militia groups or common criminals may have been behind the attack in Puerto Asis, located 530 kilometres southwest of Bogota, the capital.
While pamphlets with FARC propaganda were found amid the bloodshed, Beltran said the attackers may have dropped them there to confuse the investigation.
Among the dead were two men and one woman, Beltran said. One of the injured was a child, he added.
Pilar Castro, a doctor at the local hospital, told local radio that the death toll numbered four, and included children. Castro appealed for blood donations for the wounded.
"We need blood because in this little hospital there are no reserves," Castro said.
Much of Colombia's coca - the main ingredient for cocaine - has been farmed in the Putumayo province where Puerto Asis is located. The coca crops are "taxed" and protected by the rebels and their paramilitary foes.
The United States has been carrying out a massive fumigation effort in Putumayo and other parts of Colombia, the world's main producer of cocaine, to wipe out the drug crops.
