. Two decades ago, Selwyn Sacks of Carnegie proposed a solution: instead of riding over the mantle, continental crust might be coupled to it, with the keels anchoring the two together. The upper mantle’s flow would propel the continents in part by pushing on the keels.

The fossil plume under Paranل is a strong sign that Sacks was right. Many of us have thought for a long time that there really had to be large-scale mantle flow connected with the motion of these big continents, says James, but this is the first time that we have gotten any concrete evidence

David James of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, believe that the continents are anchored into the mantle by deep keels of rock that extend hundred of miles below the surface, and the continental crust and mantle therefore move in concert

PLATE TECTONICS: RULES OF THUMB
CRScotese 12/19/93; updated 081312

Plates with a large area of continent move slowly (e.g., Eurasia) because they have a deep
continental keel connected to the mantle

Hot spots under moving plates speed them up, a bit.
 They thin the continent's "mantle keel" that usually slows plate motion.
 They "grease the skids" by melting the base of the lithosphere (decreasing
mantle drag forces).
If mantle plumes and hot spots did not exist, the plates would still move, continents would
still break apart, move across the globe and collide!
But the things would be less interesting.

He discovered that the oceanic crust has a relatively uniform thickness, while continental crust is thickest under mountain ranges and thinner under plains.
The map below illustrates the thickness of Earth's crust. Note how the thickest areas (red and dark brown) are beneath some of Earth's important mountain ranges such as the Andes (west side of South America), Rockies (Western North America), Himalayas (north of India in South-central Asia), and Urals (north-south trending between Europe and Asia).

The map shows that the Moho exists at a depth of about 40 miles (70 km) under mountainous regions such as the Himalayas, but is at a much shallower 6-mile (10 km) depth under the oceans

And what do we notice when we study the Moho across the planet? It appears very close to the surface, at depths as low as 3-5 kilometers, beneath the oceans. It appears as deep as 50 kilometers below the highest mountains. As 2

the cratons are very old, and surrounding them are the continental shields, which represent the cores of yet younger mountain ranges that have grown outward from the craton
s. In the United States the Great Plains between the Appalachians and the Rockies comprise the continental shield.

.
and the continents began to embed themselves into plates that had mantle roots
, and they began to develop their own unique lithospheres as well.

These observations suggest that mountain building, a process geologists call "orogeny" is an
essential part of continental growth
.

The mountain building process causes continents to increase in size over time.
.

Regardless of how they formed,
mountain belts along convergent boundaries stop growing when subduction ends. They gradually deteriorate to become part of the low-lying craton itself. Ultimately, of course, mountain building ends,
and that signals the end of convergent plate motion, a settling back or perhaps low angle distributive faulting occurs, which extend the mountain belt rather than compress it, and the forces of erosion once this constructional stage is over take over.

.
.
..
In time, mountains wear flat, adding new crust to the cratons, the oldest, most stable lands on the planet Earth
there are many effects of mountain building which are of interest to geologists. This actually represents a continuing differentiation of the Earth. The process of "orogeny" tends to concentrate the lighter elements in the crust
when recycles the heavy elements back into the mantle, and this
,
overall, increases the layering of the Earth.

Growth of granite–greenstone terranes at convergent margins, and stabilization of Archean cratons
Convergent margin accretionary processes that
contribute to the growth of the continental crust can
be divided into five major groups (Table 2): (1)

oceanic plateau accretion; (2) oceanic island arc accretion;
(3) normal ocean crust (mid-ocean ridge)
accretion=ophiolite obduction; (4) back-arc basin accretion;
and arc–trench migration=Turkic-type
orogeny accretion. We have illustrated these processes
using specific well-studied examples of each,
emphasizing the Schreiber–Hemlo area of the Superior
Province because it shows features related to
several of these process. These early accretionary
processes are typically followed by intrusion of latestage
anatectic granites, late gravitational collapse,
and late strike-slip faulting.
Together,* these processes
release volatiles from the lower crust and mantle and
help to stabilize young accreted crust and form stable
continent
