Does grape juice offer the same heart benefits as red wine
?
Answer
from Martha Grogan, M.D
Possibly. Some research studies suggest that red and purple grape juices may provide some of the same heart benefits of red wine, including :
1- Reducing the risk of blood clots
2- Reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol
3- Preventing damage to blood vessels in your heart
4- Helping maintain a healthy blood pressure
Grapes are rich in health-protecting antioxidants, including resveratrol and flavonoids. These antioxidants are found mainly in the skin, stem, leaf and seeds of grapes, rather than in their pulp. The amount of antioxidants in grapes depends on many factors, including the kind of grape, its geographic origin and how it's processed. Dark red and purple grapes tend to be higher in antioxidants than are white or green grapes. Likewise, the level of antioxidants such as resveratrol found in wine varies, with higher levels in red wine
Besides grape juice, other grape products may offer health benefits, including dealcoholized wine, grape extracts and grape powder
Keep in mind that it's also beneficial to eat whole grapes — not just grape juice. Some research suggests that whole grapes deliver the same amount of antioxidants that are in grape juice and wine but have the added benefit of providing dietary fiber

The components of red wine are well studied, and when combined, demonstrate a variety of health benefits involving the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. White wine, which is made without the skins, demonstrates far fewer benefits Grape juice may contain as many beneficial compounds as red wine, depending greatly on its production, but without the alcohol contentAlcohol inhibits platelet cell clotting, which is desirable for people with certain conditions, but overall it is considered to impact health negatively
Benefits of Proanthocyanidins :
Many of the studies supporting the benefits of red wine and grape juice involve compounds known as polyphenols, which are strong antioxidants able to scavenge free radicals and protect the deterioration of blood vessels and aging of other tissues. A main group of polyphenols found in grapes are flavonoids, which are present in red wine and some varieties of grape juice as proanthocyanidins
Grape seeds are the richest source of proanthocyanidins and are often crushed in the process of making red wine. Whether they are present in grape juice in significant amounts depends on the type of grape used and the method of production. Juice based on seedless grapes has little-to-no proanthocyanidin content. In addition to antioxidant behavior, proanthocyanidins also display anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties, which offer protection against cardiovascular diseases, as cited in "Medical Nutrition and Disease"
Benefits of Resveratrol :
Resveratrol is another type of polyphenol found in dark-colored grapes, particularly within the skins. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant able to prevent fatty blockages and blood clots in arteries, inhibit bacterial and fungi growth, reduce inflammation and promote neuron growth in the brain, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Red wine is the richest source of resveratrol because its production often involves fermenting all parts of the grape together, such as the skin, seeds, leaves and vines, which all contain resveratrol. Red wine contains between 0.2 and 5.8 mg/L of resveratrol, depending on grape type and aging, whereas white wine contains much less. Good quality organic grape juice made from red or purple grapes with seeds may contain as much resveratrol as some red wines but likely not as much as most
Benefits of Tannins and Lignans :
Tannins and lignans are other types of polyphenols in grapes, which display antioxidant and other beneficial properties. Tannins are astringent compounds that give red wine and some grape juices their dryness and causes a puckering sensation in the mouth. Tannins are effective against diarrhea, stomach upset, inflammation and some microbes. Lignans are derived from wood and give some red wines their woody aftertaste, although the wood kegs in which they are stored affect taste also. Again, the amount of tannins and lignans in red wine and grape juice is highly variable but often much higher in wine, especially bottles that are aged, according to "Contemporary Nutrition"
Issues with Alcohol :
Most red wines contain about 10 percent alcohol, although some contain as high as 14 percent. Despite being able to reduce the "stickiness" of blood platelet cells involved in clotting, most health experts agree that alcohol cannot be considered healthy. Alcohol has a depressant affect on the brain; it reduces cognitive function and coordination; its breakdown products are toxic, and are especially harmful to the liver, pancreas and nerves; and it is habit forming. As such, the negative health consequences of alcohol may greatly negate the benefits of red wine, which means that high quality grape juice made by crushing dark-colored grapes with seeds may offer more health benefits overall

WebMD -- Even the most heartening news about the health benefits of wine wasn't enough to convince Susan Sanford to imbibe. "I've just never liked the taste of alcohol," says Sanford, 42, a film sound engineer in Northern California. "Still, with all the headlines, you can't help wondering whether you're missing out on something that might lower your risk of heart disease"
Well, Susan Sanford, worry no more. If you don't like wine, the latest studies show you can get almost all the same benefits from grape juice. The reason: Purple grape juice contains the same powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, called flavonoids, that are believed to give wine many of its heart-friendly benefits
What'll it be: Wine or Welch's ..?
The flavonoids in grape juice, like those in wine, have been shown to prevent the oxidation of so-called bad cholesterol (LDLs, or low-density lipoproteins) that leads to formation of plaque in artery walls
In a study published in 1999 in the journal Circulation, researchers at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison asked 15 patients who already showed clinical signs of cardiovascular disease -- including plaque-constricted arteries -- to drink a tall glass of grape juice daily. After 14 days, blood tests revealed that LDL oxidation in these patients was significantly reduced. And ultrasound images showed changes in the artery walls, indicating that their blood was flowing more freely
Grape juice can also lower the risk of developing the blood clots that lead to heart attacks, according to unpublished findings from Georgetown University researcher Jane Freedman, M.D. So can red wine, but in this case grape juice is the more practical way to go: "Wine only prevents blood from clotting (when it's consumed) at levels high enough to declare someone legally drunk," says University of Wisconsin researcher John Folts, Ph.D. "With grape juice, you can drink enough to get the benefit without worrying about becoming intoxicated"
What's more, alcoholic drinks don't seem to improve the function of cells in blood vessel linings the way grape juice does. And alcohol generates free radicals -- unstable oxygen molecules that can actually cause damage to blood vessel tissues -- dampening any of the benefits that red wine's antioxidants may offer
Longer-lasting protection :
Even better news, for Sanford and other teetotalers, is that the antioxidants in grape juice appear to linger in the body longer than do those in wine
At the University of California, Davis, researchers took a 1996 cabernet sauvignon, removed all the alcohol, and asked a group of nine volunteers to alternate between drinking the nonalcoholic wine one day and an alcoholic version the next. In their findings, reported in the January 2000 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a key antioxidant called catechin remained in the blood for more than 4 hours after the volunteers drank the nonalcoholic wine, compared to only 3.2 hours for the full-strength cabernet. Apparently, alcohol hastens the breakdown of the antioxidant in the blood, speeding its elimination from the body
But wine may provide at least one benefit grape juice doesn't: Alcohol has been shown to increase levels of HDL, the so-called good cholesterol, in the blood
Even so, if you're a non-drinker, grape juice is a terrific way to get many of wine's potential health benefits, Folts says. If you do go for the juice, choose the purple kind, which is far richer in antioxidant flavonoids than red or white Surprisingly, eating red table grapes won't provide as much protection. That's because the juice is made by crushing not just the skin and flesh but the seeds, too, which are especially rich in flavonoids White grapes and grape juice won't do either, because they don't contain the flavonoids that purple or red grapes do
Sanford can now rest assured. With a glass of purple grape juice with breakfast or for an afternoon snack, her heart can realize the same benefits as those of her wine-drinking friends. And if you don't want wine at dinner, uncork one of the fine nonalcoholic reds on the market. They're loaded with antioxidants as well as great flavor -- and you can drink all you like without worrying about driving home

Having a glass of purple grape juice is beneficial to your heart. The antioxidant, resveratrol, is found in red wine and purple grape juice. But, drinking purple grape juice is even better than drinking red wine because you can drink enough juice to get the health benefits without becoming intoxicated
STUDIES OF PURPLE GRAPE JUICE BENEFITS :
Studies by John Folts, Ph.D. of the University of Wisconsin and Keevil, Osman, Jess, Reed, and Folts, compared different juices (grape, orange, and grapefruit) on platelet activity. The study found purple grape juice was associated with lower blood clotting and thus less risk of heart disease. In addition, regarding the benefits of wine, Dr. Folts had stated that to help prevent blood from clotting, the wine consumed would have to be at levels high enough to be declared legally drunk (Folts cited in University of Wisconsin-Madison News, 1997)
In addition, Dr. Folts found that the amount of purple grape juice needed for beneficial effects was about 10-12 ounces a day, and had a cumulative protective effect over time
In another study, a comparison was made between wine with alcohol and wine without. The study by Jennifer RC Bell found that the flavonoid called Catechin in wine stayed in the body longer with the de-alcoholized wine compared to the regular wine (Bell, et. al., 2000)
Eating red grapes would be beneficial, but a large amount would be need to be consumed in order to match a glass of juice
