Undskyld MuhammedGlobalDanes clash on web in Prophet row
The controversy in Denmark over the reprinting of one of the 12 cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad this week has triggered an unusual dialogue on social networking group Facebook, writes the BBC's religious affairs correspondent Frances Harrison.
Anders says the debate in the media has been very black-and-white
The row began with Tuesday's arrests of three Muslims in Denmark said by the intelligence services to be plotting to kill one of the cartoonists.
All the major Danish newspapers next day rallied round their colleague, reprinting his drawing of the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban as a sign of solidarity.
But now young Danish student Anders Boetter says he has decided to start a Facebook site called Sorry Muhammad to apologise to Muslims on behalf of ordinary Danes and also give them a voice in the controversy over the row.
What does hurt my feelings is when a Danish newspaper publishes these very mocking cartoons of Muhammad

Sorry Muhammad
Anders says that in the last two years since the first printing of the cartoons, the media has built up a debate which is very black-and-white.
"Either you were for the Muhammad drawings or you were against it, but I believe there are many Danes who do not feel that way - they're somewhere in between and I am one of them," he explains.
"I am myself an atheist, but I do respect any kind of religion," he says, adding that the cartoons therefore do not offend him but he understands that it "hurts the feelings of Muslims a lot".
'Shockingly fast'
During the first cartoon crisis in 2006, Anders says he e-mailed his Muslim friends around the world to apologise.

UPDATE: "Undskyld Muhammed" ("Sorry Muhammed") has been joined by 1000 members in 24 hours!
One does not need to denigrate that which is holy to others, in order to emphasise the sanctity of the freedom of speech.
“Sorry Muhammed” was founded as a reaction to several Danish newspapers’ decision to reprint pictures depicting the prophet Muhammed, which were first published in Jyllands Posten in September 2005.
”Sorry Muhammed” is an attempt to create a more nuanced debate about the freedom of speech and to apologize to those Muslims who feel offended and affronted throughout the world.
“Sorry Muhammed” acknowledges and strongly supports the fundamental role played by the freedom of speech in a democratic society and the importance of citizens being able to freely express their differences of opinion without fear of reprisals. Consequently, “Sorry Muhammed” strongly condemns any attempt to harm or kill another person due to disagreement over a particular action or conviction.
At the same time, “Sorry Muhammed” critically questions the necessity of printing a picture of the prophet Muhammed, with a bomb in his turban. This picture has previously proved highly inflammatory in large parts of the Muslim world and can too easily be construed as denigrating and demeaning towards Muslims.
”Sorry Muhammed” asks, what was the purpose of choosing to print, once more, such a provocative picture of the prophet? This is an action that can have great ramifications for Denmark’s reputation, her trade interests as well as Danes living and working abroad.
Was it necessary to reprint these pictures? Do they not have a more divisive effect, rather than creating the conditions for dialogue and a sober discussion of the relationship between freedom of speech and its limits?
“Sorry Muhammed” believes that we should safeguard the freedom of speech and its application. It should not be used as a free-ticket or a poor excuse for actions that alienate, create hostility and removes the conditions required to engage in constructive debate.
“Sorry Muhammed” encourages Danish media and citizens to use their freedom of expression in a thoughtful and considerate manner. Freedom of speech is a special right, which should be exercised responsibly, in a sober and mature fashion; it should not be abused.
On behalf of the "Undskyld Muhammed" group,
Anders Bøtter
