Islamic Dictionary of Terminology

When a person first becomes Muslim they will begin to hear lots of terms regularly used and may become confused or unsure about what is being talked about. Arabic is the language of the Qur'an so naturally, the terminology in Islam is frequently used instead of the English words. It is important that you familiarize yourself with the key terms so that you will not be lost when attending lectures, reading, and listening to others. This will give you a firm point of reference when you have questions. It is very common that whoever you are questioning will not always know the English words for questions you may have. This does not mean that they are not educated-it is simply a language barrier problem and nothing more. People from all parts of the world use different words for things that will confuse you if you don't familiarize yourself with it. Anytime you hear a word that you don't know, don't be afraid to ask that person what it means because you will never know if you don't ask. Many times when people are talking to you they often forget that you are a new Muslim and don't know what it means. Don't be shy to ask. It is the key to developing your vocabulary and will make it easier for you to learn Arabic and to read the Qur'an.
Most importantly, when you are reading and come across words that you don't know, you must realize that what you are reading is a transliteration, meaning it is how the word would probably be spelled in your language if you were to pronounce the word in Arabic. There is NO correct/incorrect spelling of a transliterated word, so when you are reading from different places, you may see words spelled differently. This does not mean it is a different word with a different meaning.

There are many variations on spellings of words when they are transliterated, so if you don't see it with one spelling, check to see if it may have been spelled slightly differently inshallah.
