Life Goes On

Life Goes On
We've all had those times when we feel as if the world just fell apart around us. Nothing seems to be going right. You just want to lock yourself up in your room and quit dealing with the world.
One of the most effective and relieving feelings in these times is to let yourself know that whatever has happened, has happened. It's done and gone. There is nothing you can do about it now, so instead of depressing yourself over it, think about how you can prevent this from happening again in the future. If you did the best you could've done, but the outcomes were still not satisfactory, don't despair over it.
Say, you spent days studying for an exam, pulled an all-nighter, an all-dayer, skipped your meals, didn't log in on Facebook for a full day, yet you still couldn't get a high grade on that exam. Yeah, that feeling is going to sting really bad, but the reality is, you did all you could have done from your end, that exam just wasn't meant to go your way. I am sure that has happened most of us in the past, if not all of us. Sometimes you just end up with that 60 or a C+. Life goes on!
There is a beautiful narration regarding this from Abu Abbas Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
"Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. Recognize and acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity. And know that what has passed you by [and you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease." 40 Hadith Nawawi 19
Another thing to always remember is to look at the big picture in life. No matter what might have befallen you, just know that there is someone out there who is in far worse situation than you are. So, be thankful for whatever you do have. Failed a course? Lost your phone? Got a ticket for speeding? House got burned down? Or a relative passed away? Yes, these are all situations which naturally make us sad, upset, angry, hopeless, etc. There is nothing wrong with showing emotions, after all we are humans and this is how we have been made.
However, these are not reasons to stop your life and sink into a depression. There are people who have never been to school and have never even seen a phone or a car, because they spent all their life living at a poor orphanage without any knowledge of who their parents are. Just be glad you are not that person. In fact, just give that person some ice cream or a new pair of shoes and they'll be the happiest people in the world. Ponder upon the simplicity!
So, remind yourself of these two things. This is probably easier said than done, because most people can't even think straight for a moment in times of hardship. However, this wasn't meant to be a magic powder that you mix with orange juice and drink it and all your worries are forever gone. It is something that can be helpful, though. And, in the end, even if you lock yourself up in a room, you're the only one who'll lose out. The world will go on, with you or without you. Harsh cold reality.
