Mohamed's Marriage from Zainab Bint Jahsh Al Asadeyah
Unfortunately, enemies of the Islam have fabricated a lot of myths and stories about its prophet. For example, they Altered the subject of Prophet Mohamed’s marriage to Zainab, the divorcee of Zaid bin Haritha. They distorted it and made it sound like a romantic love story in an effort to discredit Mohamed (Pbuh) of his reverence and esteem. Their lies were undressed by referring back to the original source of the subject and where it was first mentioned: the Qur’an verses. Scholars proved the falseness and weakness of authenticating such stories and confirmed their being insinuated and groundless.
What is the truth of the matter in marriage story of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) to the wife of Zaid bin Haritha?
Zainab Bint Jahsh is one of the prophet’s wives and he married her in the 5th year of Hijrah. She is the daughter of Omaimah Bint Abdul Muttalib, the aunt of the prophet; and the wife of Zaid bin Haritha before becoming the wife of the Messenger of Allah.
As for Zaid bin Haritha, husband Zainab before the Prophet, he was called before Islam: Zaid son of Muhammad, but he was not actually a true son for Mohamed (PBUH). He was a slave, whom Khadija purchased and gifted to Mohamed after their marriage so that he can serve him. Mohamed manumitted and adopted him to raise his social status according to the Arab traditions during those times, and after Zaid’s parents dishonored, expelled and abandoned him.
Thus Mohamed gave him prestige, honor and a raised status to the extend that he was called “Zaid son of Mohamed”
When Prophet Mohamed felt Zaid‘s need to marry, he told him to marry his aunt's daughter Zainab Bint Jahsh, but Zainab abstained as it was not acceptable that a Free lady marries a ex-slave, particularly when Zainab was from a renowned and honorable family.
Then these verses were revealed:
))) وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَن يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ وَمَن يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا مُّبِينًا(((
Meaning: It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allâh and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allâh and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed into a plain error..))).
When Zainab heard these verses, she immediately agreed, and informed Mohamed of her acceptance to marry Zaid. Thus, marriage happened according to her own will and in obedience of God’s instructions mentioned in the verses above and in obedience to the Messenger of Allâh, too.
We wanted the Prophet peace be upon him break the customs and traditions that were wrong and prevent the marriage of daughters of slaves liberated from families known, and has already achieved great prophet of what he wanted and managed by the application of equality between members of the Islamic community.
According to Al Hafiz Bin Kathir: “Messenger of Allah wedded Zaid to Zainab Bin Jahsh Al Asadeyah, whose mother is Omaimah Bint Abdul Muttalib, her dowry was 10 dinars and sixty dirhams and a veil. She stayed with him almost a year, or more. “(Ibn Kathir interpretation 3/495)
Here, we ask the hypocrites: how on earth Mohamed yearns for Zainab when he is the one who recommended her for Zaid as a wife?
Mohamed wanted to break the wrong customs & traditions, which prevented the marriage of freed slaves to daughters of renowned families. Indeed he managed to achieve what he aimed for; setting equality among members of the Islamic society.
After that the marital relationship between the Zaid and Zainab worsened to the extent of separation, despite persistent attempts by Mohamed to prevent divorce. Mohamed‘s advice to Zaid failed to change his stance and divorce was inevitable.
Prophet Mohammad's marriage to Zainab:
After few months of Zainab’s divorce, Mohamed decided to marry her in compensation for of what happened as a result of his recommendation, but he feared the customs and traditions that prohibited the marriage of a man from his son’s ex-wife, even if he was adopted for Arabs used to consider the adopted son as a true son. Here these Qur’an verses were revealed:
Meaning: And (remember) when you said to him (Zaid, the freed-slave of the Prophet on whom Allâh has bestowed Grace (by guiding him to Islâm) and you (O Muhammad have done favor (by manumitting him): "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear Allâh." But you did hide in yourself (i.e. what Allâh has already made known to you that He will give her to you in marriage) that which Allâh will make manifest, you did fear the people (i.e., their saying that Muhammad married the divorced wife of his manumitted slave) whereas Allâh had a better right that you should fear Him.
Ayadh the Judge said :
"The most accurate of all this is what the scholars of interpretations said according to Ali Bin Al Hussain: that God informed Mohamed that Zainab will be one of his wives , that is why when Zaid complained Zainab to him , Mohamed advised Zaid to Keep his wife to himself and to fear Allah, hiding in himself what Allâh has already made known to him; which is giving Zainab to him in marriage.
Same was also narrated by Amr Bin Fa’ed, quoting Al Zohari saying : “ Jibril descended to Mohamed and informed him that Allah is informing him that Zainab will be his wife , and this is what Mohamed hid in himself . This is also confirmed by interpreters explanations of this verse وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولا
meaning: And Allah’s Command must be fulfilled.
Al Hafiz Bin Kathir mentioned in his interpretation for Allah’s saying:
وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَاهُ
Meaning: But you did hide in yourself what Allâh has already made known to you that He will give her to you in marriage, that which Allâh will make manifest, you did fear the people whereas Allâh had a better right that you should fear Him.
That Iban Aby Hatim & Al Tabary mentioned that it was found in some unauthenticated sources that the meaning may mean “ liked her “ , but all these are interpretations with no proof .
It is important to note here that Mohamed’s marriage to Zainab was a divinely order by Allah, and this is further confirmed by Quran verses, where Allah tells Mohamed:
